Where magnetars live
One of the magnetars that scientists have focused on was called 1E 2259+586 and it is located 10,000 light-years from Earth. Its home is in the constellation of Cassiopeia, and it was discovered using NASA’s Swift observatory. In the constellation Perseus, lies the neutron star NGC 1624-2 which is about 20,000 light-years away and has around 35 times the sun’s mass. The magnetar known as SGR 1806-20 is located 50,000 light-years from Earth and lies on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy. There are many other magnetars in the Cosmos such as SWIFT J195509+261406 and CXO J164710.2-455216 although it’s not as clear as to where they came from or which star the evolved from.
